After reading Chapter 21 (will do 22 next week) and after watching the inteview and exhibition videos in the Build Your Knowledge area, please discuss at least two of the following and add your own thoughts about what you found interesting in the reading. Feel free, as always, to post images that you’d like to talk about further.
1) talk a bit about Milton Glaser’s (or other’s from the Pushpin Studio’s) method of combining images and ideas from disparate places and combining them into a single, well-design concept? What do you gather from the reading that conceptual design is? How might it be different from other approaches we have seen?
2) 60’s Psychadelica is a whole new thing all of a sudden! Or is it?
What periods of graphic design past do you see influencing this new take on the poster? Also, whatis new? What was the function of this design?
Additionally, find a poster or 60’s/70’s album cover you find particularly cool and tell us why you like it. (If you have an older person around, say the age of your prof here – 57!! – ask them what their favorite music poster or album cover was from back in the day. – They will have one!)
3) Comment on some of the Cuban revolutionary art, or earlier Polish posters or French posters. What is the nature of these new revolutionary designs? What did you learn from the chapter that was interesting about these contributions?

Interference Archive presents Armed By Design/El Diseño a las Armas: Posters and Publications of Cuba’s Organization of Solidarity of the Peoples of Africa, Asia, and Latin America (OSPAAAL), a public exhibition and event series which features the graphic design production of the Organization in Solidarity with the Peoples of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Based in Havana, OSPAAAL produced nearly 500 posters, magazines, and books from the late 1960s through the present.
OSPAAAL developed out of the Tricontinental Conference, a 1966 meeting in Havana of delegates representing national liberation movements and political parties almost exclusively from the global south. Marrying a design that has unique Cuban aesthetics with literature from revolutionary thinkers, OSPAAAL was, and remains, a political organization focused on fighting US imperialism and supporting leftist liberation movements around the world. OSPAAAL became propagandists for these movements, supporting them through poster production, two different regularly produced journals (Tricontinental and the Tricontinental Bulletin), and a series of longer format books featuring the writings of the intellectual leadership of these movements.
Armed By Design/El Diseño a las Armas will highlight the intersection of graphic design and political solidarity work in post-revolution Cuba through the lens of OSPAAAL’s output. The public exhibition will highlight the Carlos Vega Poster Collection, donated to Interference Archive by his son, Jesse Maceo Vega-Frey. The late Vega was a community organizer in Western Massachusetts whose collection of over 50 OSPAAAL posters was acquired on trips to Cuba in the 1970s. In addition, Armed by Design will include OSPAAAL posters and materials collected by Interference Archive co-founder Dara Greenwald (1971–2012) on a trip to Cuba in 2003.

In the late 1960s, San Francisco was ground zero for an unprecedented social revolution. Artists created a new genre in the process: the collectible rock concert poster.
Dreams Unreal explores the development of counter culture in San Francisco from 1965-1970 through the posters, hand bills and postcards that were printed to advertise music performances and events. The intersection of music and the arts became central to the youth culture that fostered social and cultural experimentation. A group of young visual artists collaborated with commercial lithographers to create these printed materials for almost daily events at venues like the Fillmore and the Avalon featuring musicians and bands like the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Janis Joplin led Big Brother and the Holding Company, and others.
Graphic artists including Lee Conklin, Rick Griffin, Alton Kelley, Bonnie Maclean, Victor Moscoso, and Wes Wilson created a new artistic genre – the collectible rock concert poster. Dreams Unreal demonstrates how these artists were influenced by posters of the past and how their innovative approaches to graphics and color reflected a changing aesthetic that was embedded in the mood of the time.

The posters featured in Dreams Unreal are part of a collection of more than 300 psychedelic posters, handbills, and post cards given to the Albuquerque Museum in 2015 by Dr. James Gunn. He acquired the images while attending the University of California Berkeley in the 1960s.

The exhibition will include Rick Griffin’s poster for the The Human Be-In, the event that paved the way for 1967’s Summer of Love, works by Wes Wilson experimenting with melting fonts, a rare poster for a cancelled Grateful Dead concert in Hawaii, and many others.
Dreams Unreal captures a moment in time when young people were imagining a different kind of future.
