Week 3: Taking the Lead: The Magnet Model

In previous weeks, we discussed how your current and future legacy is a meaningful and profound contribution to the quality of health care and to the safety of patients. This week we are discussing the ANCC (American Nurses Credentialing Center) Magnet Recognition Program (Magnet), an international credentialing program where nurses appreciate nurses for their nursing achievements. It is the highest recognition for nursing excellence within a health care organization!

Magnet is a guiding framework whereby you and your nursing colleagues are encouraged to intensify your efforts to improve organizational conditions, components, and processes of health care systems to enhance patient safety. The model serves as a road map for organizations seeking nursing excellence in five areas. Click on the following image and read about each of the five areas:

From Magnet, there has emerged a growing understanding of the professional elements that attract and retain nurses. The professional elements are now identified as the “best practices” for successful nurse recruitment and retention. Magnet status is awarded to health care institutions that act as a “magnet” for nurses by offering a work environment that rewards quality nursing services. Magnet health care institutions, in turn, enjoy improved patient outcomes. Think about which of the best practices are, or are not, present in your professional life and your strategies for improvement. Then proceed to the learning objectives for this week.

Discussion: Nurses Make the Difference

Health care organizations that adhere to or seek Magnet designation (Magnet hospitals) are exemplars in serving patients. They are recognized as organizations that have high nurse satisfaction and lower rates of nurse shortages. These organizations tend to have higher degrees of nurse involvement at all levels of decision making. Magnet hospitals also have improved patient outcomes.

For this Discussion, you explore how Magnet status contributes to health care change within an institution and the personal contribution nurses make to this process.

It is important for nurses to stay abreast of current issues and trends in our field. Use this opportunity to develop or enhance your expertise on your chosen topic.

    • Use the Walden Library to research the impact of nursing on healthcare quality as viewed through the Magnet professional practice model. Select one current (published within the last 5 years) research article on this topic to address. This week’s Library Learning Resources will guide you through your database search.

Write a one-page summary and response to the article that you selected from the Walden Library. A template is provided in the Learning Resources to guide you in formatting your paper.

As you reflect on the findings in your chosen article, consider how the findings compare to your own professional nursing experience with Magnet, or, if you have no personal experience with Magnet, your thoughts concerning Magnet:

  • Include an introduction, body, and a summary (conclusion).
  • Consider factors or principles from the article that hold true for or resonate with you.
