Final Paper Write a response paper on one of the stories discussed in Module 4. The paper must be 3-4 pages, double-spaced with Times New Roman Font, 12 pt. and follows MLA style. You are required to cite at least three passages from the text and provide close attention to minute details (words, phrases, tones, etc.) as a support for your argument. You may use the ideas provided on your Discussion Board posts, but do not copy and paste them. You need to develop them by further exploring your initial analysis. Deadlines: Working Draft due by Saturday, November 14 at 11:59pm; Final Draft due by Saturday, November 23 at 11:59pm Working Draft needs to be submitted on the Discussion Board for group peer review (see below); Final Draft needs to be uploaded through the link given in the “Assignment Submission” folder on Blackboard. Make sure your file is saved and submitted in a doc./docx format.
Question: Use textual evidence from the selected story and analyze how it illustrates the ways in which individual perceptions and decisions are formed by multiple factors. Then, elaborate on your argument about how the story enables the reader to envision the way of addressing racial conflicts through such particular and limited perspectives. By focusing on certain characters or scenes of the story, your paper needs to dig deep and consider how such issues as segregation, discrimination, microaggression, and brutality disguised as “justice” are captured and what message is presented in the story’s own way. To do so, you need to connect your close reading of the selected passages to bigger questions: What constructs individual perceptions and decisions in face with racial others?; What makes it difficult and complicated to change such perceptions?; What should we do to cause a fundamental change in one’s deep-rooted belief and values or unconscious perceptions?; How does a fictional story enable the reader to join the task of not only writing but also creating history with a critical mode of thinking? *It is not required to use secondary sources, but you may use the materials discussed in earlier modules or those found in your own research.
Working Draft: Note that your Working Draft is NOT a rough draft or outline. It needs to contain the required components listed below to give a good idea of what your final draft would look like. Yet your working draft can include questions or comments that identify where you need more time or help to develop further (Use a different color or highlight to mark them). Having these notes will not only help you to reflect on your writing but also help me to give specific feedback. Group Peer Review (on Discussion Board) On November 16 and 18, you and your group members will write comments to each other’s draft on the Discussion Board. Download and carefully read your group members’ drafts, while taking notes. Then, post a summary of your feedback as Reply to each member’s thread. Your feedback must articulate 1) what is the strongest idea in the paper or what is most effective in conveying the writer’s claim and 2) what needs to be polished or clarified for a better argument. Provide specific example from the draft to back up your thoughts. You will receive 8 points for this second group peer review by completing feedback to all of your group members by the end of Wednesday, November 18.
Individual Conference (on Zoom) In the same week as Group Peer Review, you will also have an option to meet me individually on Zoom.
