In this critical reflection essay as thought-experiment, the task is to learn as much as you can about Sarah Sttitzlein’s concept of hope, and take that understanding and speculate about how it might help you to integrate a concept of hope into your classrooms. In short, How can you best cultivate the capacity to hope among your students? What sort of lessons and strategies can you use to develop this all-important capacity? To do so, of course, one must first be very clear about what hope is and what it isn’t, as well as how hope is connected to the norms of democratic culture.
For class on November 11, read chapter 6 in Stitzlein’s book, Learning How to Hope (103-138), while focusing special attention on the section, Cultivate Imagination and Storytelling (121-126). Taken together with our earlier assigned chapters, there is ample material for you to develop an informed theory of hope and to think through various ways that this vital human capacity might be adopted to enliven the el ed classroom.
Because many of you may want to quote our guest speaker, Betsy Brantner, who will be responding to your questions about teaching hope in the el ed classroom, for purposes of citation, simply cite such quotations as (Brantner, class notes).
