Assignment: Synthesis/Report Essay For this assignment, you will use and refer to three academic articles that you included on your Annotated Bibliography. Through summary, compare and contrast, and other strategies, you will begin to synthesize the information from your research and provide your reader with an overview of what you are learning. The role of a Report is to provide the reader with multiple perspectives about a focused topic. For the writer, a report gives the opportunity to summarize, analyze, and synthesize various perspectives from a variety of sources. Synthesizing information is an important step in the research process, as this is where you do the work of processing and truly understanding the material you are reading in research sources. Often, in academic work, this may not be a formalized step of the process — but it is an important one. ** Please note that this assignment is not one in which you take a position or stance on the topic itself. The purpose here is to simply summarize the main ideas from each source, and then compare and contrast the three sources with one another. To assist you in planning your draft, consult the outline below. Your Synthesis/Report essay should use the following structure: Begin with an introduction in which you provide the reader with an understanding of your topic and research questions. Your introduction should also name all three sources using title and author’s full name. In one paragraph for each source, summarize the main claims and supports of each article. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each article. In one or two paragraphs (after the summaries) discuss: What connections do you see between these sources? What conclusions can you draw from what you have learned? How do the sources compare to or contrast with one another? No concluding paragraph is required – simply report what you have learned in your research. The tone of this essay should be fairly neutral — you are mainly providing a neutral summary of each article, and then synthesizing information to begin to develop new knowledge and conclusions. Other requirements for this assignment are as follows: Your essay should be 3-4 pages long (not counting the Works Cited page), and formatted correctly in MLA-style. You must use three (3) sources that you found in your research and listed on your Annotated Bibliography. You may select any 3 sources from your research, as long as you included them in your Annotated Bibliography. You must include appropriate in-text citations for each source, and a Works Cited page that lists each source with correct MLA 8 citations. Refer to Chapter 54 of your textbook for detailed templates for MLA 8 citations. An in-text citation should appear after every use of direct quotation or specific information from a source. It is likely that you will need to use only a few direct quotations, as your primary purpose is summarizing and discussing information.
