1.       The History of Organizational Ethics

Organizational ethics has no doubt changed throughout the years. For instance, remember when tobacco companies marketed directly to children? Wow, things have changed! But how have they changed? Where did the focus on organizational ethics start? Where is it today? This week, you will attempt to answer questions such as these. You will focus on the history of organizational ethics.

What is the difference between organizational ethics and individual ethics? Can an organization be ethical without ethical people working in it, or vice versa? An example of this would be an organization that recycles but hires employees who do not personally recycle. That is just one example of how individuals can differ from the organization they serve. Taken to the next level, what happens when an organization has a CEO who is unethical or the CEO is ethical, but others within the organization as a whole are not? There are many examples of how ethical or unethical leaders have changed their organization for the better or worse through the years.

You will also review scholarly sources and conduct independent research on how practices, policies, and overall thoughts about ethics have changed. What has history taught us? Will organizational ethics continue to evolve? If so, how? Take your time this week to explore how organizational ethics have changed throughout the years.

Assignment: Assess the Evolution of Organizational Ethics

Before ethical leadership practices can be improved, you must understand the history of organizational ethics. What does it mean to be an ethical organization? What must be done to not only become an ethical organization but also maintain an ethical culture? Before you can understand the present and move toward the future, you must have a firm understanding of history.

Exploring important dates and the evolution of key practices will help provide an overall picture of organizational ethics and where they stand today. For this assignment, develop a timeline of the evolution of ethical organizational leadership, along with the evolution of ethics within business organizations as a whole. If possible, use your own organization. Using your organization will give you both access and insight. It is recommended to use a pseudonym. If you are unable to use your organization, choose one from the list below:

  • Wells Fargo
  • BP Oil
  • Enron

You may use PowerPoint, Excel, or any other program you are comfortable with to create your timeline. Include a minimum of 10 events within your timeline. Be sure to explain why you chose each moment in time and how it changed organizational ethics for the better or worse.

Length: one timeline with brief explanations of each event, not including title or reference pages

References: Include a minimum of 5 scholarly resources. You may include your references in your timeline or on a separate document.

Your timeline should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards where appropriate.

2.   Positive Organizational Culture

An organization’s culture plays a large part in whether it succeeds or fails. Organizational culture communicates complex ideas in a manner that will not only communicate, but foster a level of transparency throughout the organization (Alvesson, 2013). When stakeholders work toward a common goal to incorporate teamwork and respect, they can focus on achieving its goals. Effective organizational leaders realize that culture cannot just be dictated from the top down. Culture is driven through the feelings and perceptions of all stakeholders. Leaders need to play a pivotal role in creating a positive environment and empowering efforts to cultivate it.

Organizational culture encompasses the shared goals and vision for an organization, but that doesn’t make it the end all, be all. Within organizational cultures, there are smaller sub-cultures that are still focused on organizational goals but have their own views about operating and working to be more efficient. Each sub-culture also has views about what specifically constitutes their part of the larger picture. At the core attributes of culture, leaders should be at the forefront of shaping expectations and behaviors, while being transparent in what values are perceived to be important and what beliefs should be fostered.

True leaders do not tell people what is important or true, but create an environment that cultivates a true partnership of all stakeholders who make the determination of what occurs within the organization. Research indicates that 94% of executives and 88% of employees believe a distinct corporate culture is important to a business’ success (Kohll, 2018). Positive culture enhances the talent, diversity, and happiness of an organization. Negative culture influences stakeholders to view the organization as a whole in a toxic fashion.

This week, you differentiate what makes a positive organizational culture.

Be sure to review this week’s resources carefully. You are expected to apply the information from these resources when you prepare your assignments.

Alvesson, M. (2013). Understanding organizational culture (2nd ed.). Los Angeles: SAGE Publications Ltd.

Kohll, A. (2018, August 14). How to build a positive company culture. Forbes.

Assignment: Explain a Positive Organizational Culture

This week, you will prepare a presentation using PowerPoint. You will create your audio presentation by using an audio/video capturing tool.  To access the capture tool, follow the tutorial found in your Books and Resources for this Week.

For this task, choose an organization such as Zappos or Southwest Airlines that is well known in the business world for their strong organizational culture. Determine which theories this organization has used as a foundation for building its culture. Use this information to create an informational lecture you could present to a class of business students that analyzes the keys in promoting a positive organizational culture. The goal here is to validate your findings with seminal research and theory. Explain how the theories utilized by the organization created an efficient, successful culture. Be sure to inform your audience which theory leads to each best practice you found within the organization’s culture.

Video Length: 5-7 minutes

PowerPoint Length: 11-12 slides, not including title or reference slides. Use the slide notes field to include a transcript of your lecture.

References: Include a minimum of 5 scholarly resources.

Your video lecture should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic.

3. Organizational Ethics Throughout the Years

As you learned from last week, organizational ethics have changed throughout the years. But how have they changed? Where do organizations stand now in comparison? These are questions that you will attempt to answer this week. There are many examples of the evolution of organizational ethics throughout recent history. For instance, children were allowed to work in factories before the 1930s in the same conditions as their adult colleagues. General working conditions, as a whole, have improved due to the evolution of organizational ethics. Labor laws and other legislative activities have helped as well. For example, there was no limit on the number of hours employees could work in a week; now, working a 40-hour workweek is the norm before additional pay is earned unless the employee is salaried. However, salaried employees are not required to work more than 40 hours by law. Also, there were no guidelines for mandatory safe working conditions. It was common for workers to face dangerous unsanitary conditions while on the job.

Organizations have come a long way in their practices. What got them here? Ethics, perhaps?

This week, you will read several articles that focus on different aspects of organizational ethics. You will analyze each article to determine how they differ from other authors’ research, and then try to identify any gaps that you may find. As you learned earlier, there is not just one ethical standard that an organization must abide by. Although there are legal standards, ethics among organizations could vary greatly. Now, let’s determine how.

Spotlight on Skills: Annotated Bibliography

  • Remember to research the wealth of resources for dealing with every academic writing need (e.g., formulating a topic for a paper, preparing an outline, developing an argument, and preparing a reference list).
  • Conduct Research and Forms of Writing that explain the annotated bibliography, which synthesizes and presents research in a concise manner. You will use this information to create an annotated bibliography for this week’s assignment.
  • Review the Instructions on How to Construct an Annotated Bibliography Entry.

You will see that in addition to the publication information (author, title, etc.), there are four main sections in an annotated bibliography entry. Each section effectively summarizes a key section of a journal article and is essential to the overall format.

Assignment: Synthesize the Literature on Ethical Organizations

When it comes to ethical leadership and organization, there is an abundance of research. Dozens of case studies and real-life examples illustrate how ethics is incorporated in the business world. It is important to be able to comprehend all of the different information and decide what is relevant to your own ethical organization. Ethics is the cornerstone of a successful organization that is sustaining and has longevity. Additionally, reading and comprehending literature is the foundation of your degree program.

This week, you will create an annotated bibliography. Conduct a comprehensive search of the scholarly literature in the Library and locate 3-5 scholarly articles concerning the core principles of ethical organizations published in the past three years. Although the articles may vary, it will be important for you to identify what the author considers as the core principles of each article.

This annotated bibliography should provide sufficient background on the topic to provide a foundation for additional scholarly work.

Begin each annotation with an APA-formatted reference for the source at the top of the page. Follow the reference with an annotation that includes:

  • Summary: Your summary should be more than a simple rehash of what is in the article—it should include an analysis of the information. What are the main arguments? What is the purpose of this article? What topics are covered? What type of research was conducted? What were the results?
  • Assessment: After summarizing a source, you should evaluate it. Is it a useful source? Is the information reliable? Is this source biased or objective? Were there any limitations? What is the goal of this source? What is its relevance to the topic? What are the study’s strengths and weaknesses?
  • Reflection: Once you have summarized and assessed a source, you need to ask how it fits into your research. Was this source helpful to you? How does it help you shape your argument? How can you use this source in your research project? Has it changed how you think about your topic?

Each annotation should be no longer than one page in length. The original reference in an annotated bibliography does not serve as a reference for any citations in your summary of the source. You must properly cite the work within your annotation and include a reference page at the end.

Once you have written each annotation, conclude your assignment with a comprehensive summary comparing the articles and identifying any gaps that may appear.

Length: 4-5 pages, not including title or reference pages

References: Include a minimum of 3 to 5 scholarly resources.

Your annotated bibliography should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards.

  1. Leadership, Reflection, and the Application of Theory

Leadership matters. To achieve success in ever-changing competitive environments, leaders today must be able to think, reflect, reintegrate, and transform the many aspects of professional activities. This role can no longer rely on knowledge, competence, and experience unless they are partnered with pioneering ways of conducting business at a multitude of levels. The days where leaders were doers and achievers alone are no longer effective in today’s professional environment. Modern models of leadership demand critical reflection, creativity, the ability to act upon feedback and an openness to the unknown. Effective leaders must develop employees at every level and ensure that there is organizational trust. Today’s leaders must foster a positive, balanced environment that utilizes sound practices, ethics, and transparency.

Leaders must focus not only on their professional development but also the development of the organization. Leadership development is important because it continually develops leaders to better engage with stakeholders’ needs and wants, striving to achieve the organization’s mission and vision. It also promotes positive morale and models best practices for employees. This development fosters organizational trust at all levels. Through these activities and processes, leaders gain a better understanding of how to positively drive the organization. Leaders must be cognizant of their strengths and weaknesses and have a formalized plan to continually build their skill set. Their plan should include reflecting on what has worked and what needs to be improved.

Self-development is a key component for leaders to remain competitive in the ever-changing and complex business environment. Leaders in organizations need to source formal leader development activities, and feedback opportunities such as 360-feedback, skills development, and assessments. When effectively utilized, these tools and processes can help to enhance leaders’ skills and abilities. Engaging in a diverse set of developmental activities that produce positive outcomes such as improved performance, authentic leadership, and increased productivity is more than ever a prerequisite in maintaining a positive organizational culture. This week, you will explore the importance of leadership improvement throughout the different levels of an organization.

Critiquing Leadership

Organizational success partially rests on the shoulders of the leaders that oversee an organization. Therefore, it is imperative that the best leaders are in place to assist an organization in its efforts to reach success. Leaders foster a relationship amongst all shareholders maintaining a shared objective to complete a common task. They analyze how well people work together and are efficient at making needed changes to increase productivity. Success in leading depends on the ability to build and sustain these relationships throughout the stages of group development. This, in turn, motivates and enables stakeholders to positively perform at all levels of an organization.

It is key for leaders to adopt more integrative approaches that are based on theory. Leaders need to consistently work on their skills and tools that they rely on daily. This is achieved, in part, by soliciting and implementing feedback. Feedback can be leveraged in a variety of ways, including team surveys. When used effectively, this can be a powerful tool with great information that can be leveraged for improvement.

This week, you will dig a little deeper into the power that analyzing feedback and implementing improvements holds. As a leader, it is a critical exercise and opportunity to remain competitive at a myriad of levels. By taking a systematic approach to this process and eliminating emotion, leaders have powerful information at their disposal that can be utilized to elicit positive change.

Be sure to review this week’s resources carefully. You are expected to apply the information from these resources when you prepare your assignments.

Assignment: Critique Leadership Survey Results

Imagine the following hypothetical scenario:

You are a mid-level manager at A-Z Corporation. In your annual employee performance review, you were presented with results from an evaluation of your leadership skills and qualities based on a survey completed by your team members. From the survey findings, below is a list of statements that were scored as average or below average:

  • My Supervisor and I have a good working relationship.
  • I am inspired to meet my goals at work.
  • I trust the Leadership Team to lead the Organization to success.
  • I trust my Leader.
  • The Leadership Team is visible and accessible.

Based on the survey results described above, determine ways you could improve your leadership skills in these areas. Explain key practices to improvement as supported by theory in the literature. Predict how you would measure your success in implementing these improvements for your next annual employee review.

Length: 4-5 pages, not including title or reference pages

References: Include a minimum of 5 scholarly resources.

Your personal assessment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards.
