Progress Report:
What are the key factors behind the water crisis in the United States?
What are the implications of the widespread water crisis in the United States?
This paper will explore in detail the causal factors behind the water crisis in the United States
and their implications on the lives of millions of Americans.
1. Background about slow regression of water crisis:
The water crisis has slowly progressed with industrialization in the country and now it has
reached a peak level.
2. Overview of the current situation of the water crisis in the United States:
Currently, many southern states are suffering from a severe water crisis.
3. Causes/ Determinants of the water crisis:
i. Industrialization
ii. Poor management
iii. Absence of governmental insights
iv. Aging infrastructure
v. Climate change
vi. Population explosion
vii. Wastage of water
4. Implications of water crisis:

i. Insufficient water for meeting the needs
ii. Impacts on the industrial sector
iii. Impacts on the agricultural sector
iv. The increased cost of underground water pumping
v. Changes in water quality
vi. Degraded springs
vii. Induced salinity
viii. Land subsidence
ix. Reduced base flow

iii. Research on the implications both in a direct
and indirect manner
3. List of resources:
For this assignment, five quality journal articles have been gathered for the research purpose.

A. Annotated Bibliography
1. Brown, Thomas C., Jorge A. Ramirez, and Vinod Mahat. “Adaptation to Future Water
Shortages in the United States Caused by Population Growth and Climate Change.”
Research Gate (2019): 12-28.
The article has been authored by Thomas C. Brown, Vindo Mahat, and Jorge A. Ramirez.
Brown is associated with Rocky Mountain Research Station, U.S. Forest Service while Ramirez
is also associated with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Colorado State
University, Fort Collins, CO, USA. The article has been discussed the relation of climate change
and population growth with the water crisis. The United States is facing an increasing challenge
of water management and although there are a number of factors responsible for these
challenges. The primary causes of these challenges include climate changes and propulsion
explosion. The increasing scarce condition of water has severe implications. This paper will use
the work of these three authors for the analysis of the final project.

2. Curry, Elliot. “Water Scarcity and the Recognition of the Human Right to Safe
Freshwater.” Northwestern Journal of International Human rights (2020): 103-110.
This article has been authored by Eliot Curry who is associated with Northerner University
School of law. In this article, he has discussed the glooming future of water scarcity. He
explained the progression of the water crisis from minimal stage to a severe level as the current
situation. Furthermore, he explained that although the water crisis is a result of individual and
collective activities every human being has a fundamental right to fresh and clean water and it is
the responsibility of the state to ensure the provision of this right. It is also discussed how the
absence of freshwater has led to a number of water-related diseases which are not just diarrhea
but this is a severe issue which results in famine and fatalities of thousands of people. This paper
will be very helpful for the research of the current paper.
3. Kummu, M., and H. de Moel. “The world’s road to water scarcity: shortage and stress in
the 20th century and pathways towards sustainability.” Research Gate (2016): 112-145.
The paper is written by two authors including M. Kammu and H. de Moel. M. Kammu is
associated with the water-based development research group of Aalto university whereas Moel is
affiliated with the institute of environmental studies, university of Amsterdam, Netherlands. The
research paper explored the growing concern of the water crisis in the world especially the
western part of the world. It further discussed the continuous trajectories of water consumption,
renewable water resources, and the industrial use of water in the 20th century and connected it
with the same patterns of the 21st century. The paper states that there were 1.24 billion people in
the 1900s who did not have access to fresh water but now this number has increased to 3.8
jiang 5
billion in the 2000s. In other words, the people facing water scarcity went from 14% to 58% in
the span of one century. These statistics and research will be used for developing an analysis of
our paper.
4. Liu, Junguo, and Hong Yang. “Water scarcity assessments in the past, present, and
future.” Research Gate (2017): 545–559.
The paper on water scarcity has been written by Junguo Liu and Hong Yang. Liu is affiliated
with the school of Environmental science and engineering, south university of science and
technology, chin and Yang is associated with the Swiss federal institute of aquatic science and
technology. The article explored the past dynamics of freshwater in the world. It discussed the
availability of freshwater, the consumption patterns, and how the population used and reused
water. It further explored the current ongoing dynamics of water usage and the availably of
freshwater and connected it with future prospects. It also connected the political and economic
factors with water availability and scarcity. The findings of this paper will be really helpful for
the research paper we will be writing.
5. Sukhwal, B.L. “Political and legal implications of water scarcity in the Southwestern
United States and alternatives of its proper utilization.” Springer Link (2017): 307–315.
The paper has been written by B.L Sukhwal on the political and legal implications of water
scarcity. The author built the significance of the water for the survival of the country through
political, geographical, economic, and legal frames. Any region irrespective of the resources,
population, or climate needs water for its development. With more population or a resource,
usage of water needs also increases. From irrigation to industry and from commercial usage to
jiang 6
personal usage water is a very basic need just like oxygen. Distribution of water resources has
been done in the light of legal procedures because the absence of fresh water to any citizens is
violations of human rights. This paper tells in detail how water is essential and how its absence
impacts the living conditions.
Comments form Prof. Where is your thesis statement? Missing complete topic sentences for each body paragraph. Sources look good. This is a broad topic obviously…perhaps talking briefly about the US issue then narrowing into 1 or 2 case studies would keep it more focused. Let me know if you have any questions
