Critical Analysis Essay

Definition:A literary critical analysis explains a work of fiction, poetry or drama by means of interpretations. The goal of a literary analysis (as with any other analysis) is to broaden and deepen your understanding of a work of literature. Critical analysis is not summary or explanation.

The foundation of Critical Analysis: The 3 C’s

This is a way to demonstrate the levels of critical thinking in relation to critical analysis.  The three C’s allow students to understand the various levels of critique.  They stand for the following:

For Prose or Narrative Poetry

C              Content   includes character & plot.  What happened?  To whom did it happen?.

C              Context includes setting, and all factors affecting the story beyond character & setting,

i.e. time, season, social structure, etc.

C              Concept includes meanings, questions raised, author’s  purpose.

For Lyrical or Metaphysical Poetry

C              Content   includes persona & tone.

C              Context    includes the world in which the poem takes

C              Concept   includes meanings, questions raised, author’s  purpose.

Content &Context  = Literal reading

Concept  = Symbolic or critical analysis reading

NOTE:  They must have some understanding of the literal in order to move to the concept and critical analysis stage of understanding and writing.

Process:

  1. Carefully read the poem or short story. Highlight significant areas.
  2. Select a story you understand and can extract an idea from which you form a firm and clear thesis statement.

    3. Outline according to topic sentences.  If you have your topic sentences, you have the hardest part of the paper mastered.

    4. Be sure to include supports from the story, including direct quotes.

    5.  Be sure your conclusion comes back the idea you think the author wants us to consider or understand.

  3. Edit, edit, edit!

The 3 C’s

The 3’s is a method of reading, evaluating and writing about a piece of literature.

By examining the 3 C’s you can more easily navigate your wat through the various levels present in most readings, including your own.

The 3 C’s are as follows:

  1. C Content

Includes Character&Plot

Character:       The characters in the story, both major & minor.

Plot:                 What happens in the story.

  1. C Context

Includes the environment of the story.

Place:              Where the story takes place.

Environment:  Time of day, season, etc.

  1. C Concept

Includes the message, ideas, interpretation, and analysis of the story.

Analysis:         What the readers believe is one message of the story. The                                                         meaning of the story according to the reader’s interpretation.

Effective stories do not stop at the literal (content & plot).  They offer concepts as well.
